The Traffic Commander from SafeAll is a truck-mounted variable message sign that effectively meets MUTCD standards. Legible from 1,000 feet, the Traffic Commander displays lights, words and arrows to give passing motorists as much time as possible to react to roadside emergencies, accident scenes and construction zones. Visible from 3,000 feet, the Traffic Commander is designed to save lives by notifying drivers of important lane closures and the presence of road crews, first responders, law enforcement and tow truck operators.
In the stowed position, the Traffic Commander serves as a Light Bar with perimeter lighting available in several color combinations. In the upright position, the light patterns continue to bring attention to the words and arrows scrolling across the face of the message board.
Once at the scene, you can scroll through preset messages and arrows to find the correct and clear commands you need for your specific situation. The pre-loaded library saves time and gets traffic moving in the direction you need them to go.
Along with traffic cones and road flares, the Traffic Commander will help create the safety cushion in which you need to work effectively and efficiently. The more you can focus on the task at hand, the faster the scene will be cleaned up and traffic can resume as normal.
Once the roadside situation is resolved, you can clear the messages and retract the sign board from the comfort or your cab, eliminating any additional exposure to nearby traffic.
The engineers at SafeAll developed the Traffic Commander to improve safety for anyone who works in high-risk, high-speed environments, most notably in and around highway traffic. The team at SafeAll wants to save lives and make sure everyone goes home at their end of their shift.
These perilous professions include tow operators, law enforcement personnel, first responders, construction crews and anyone else who makes a living on the side of the road. Visible from 3,000 feet and legible from 1,000 feet, the Traffic Commander alerts motorists to their presence and gives drivers plenty of time to react, slow down and move over.
Independent studies from AAA and a growing collection of customer testimonials prove this variable message sign works. The Traffic Commander has been proven to save lives in the field. Operators trust it because they’ve seen the impact firsthand. Read what they have to say below.
I’ve been hit once every winter, except this winter, and I believe this is due to the Traffic Commander. When we are using the Traffic Commander, we are getting traffic to comply exactly how we are wanting them to. Right now, we have nearly a 100% compliance right.
- Mountain Recovery
It all comes down to safety. I’ve been doing this work for close to 30 years now, and I’m a firm believer if you use nice reflective traffic cones and that sign–nothing’s foolproof–but that’s about as safe as you are going to get out there.
- Arrow Towing
It works better than anything we've seen. I had a driver who had to go to I-35W. Believe it or not, every single vehicle moved over and left a lane completely open while he loaded the vehicle. This isn't the first time we've seen this, in fact it happens every single time. It will save lives.

SafeAll’s message board is comprised of four sealed LED black bricks that can be replaced in the field if damaged to minimize downtime. Contrasted against a black background, words are displayed in four or five amber letters and stand 18” tall to comply with MUTCD standards. The sign is ventilated and resists vibration and fading for both daytime and nighttime visibility and clarity.
Flashing and rotating patterns help increase visibility of your truck to passing motorists while reducing risk of accidents.
Additional front-facing warning lightheads ensure visibility of oncoming traffic when the board is upright. Choose from several color combinations.
Arrows and chevrons can be selected to scroll across the sign to give motorists clear direction on which way to go. Use this function for approaching lane closures, accident scenes, construction jobs, flood control measures and other traffic-impeding situations.
In the full, upright position, the Traffic Commander can still be read from a 30-degree angle, accounting for the incline of a car carrier bed or a hillside scenario. The tilt function of the board also accommodates other elevation considerations.
The Traffic Commander is IP67-rated for waterproof and weatherproof protection. The aluminum frame won’t rust, and each LED brick is ventilated for moisture and heat dissipation. Thus, the display won’t discolor and fog like competitive signs with an outer polyurethane shell.
Whether operated through a hard-wired Dial or wirelessly through a mobile device, the Traffic Commander’s library can be pre-loaded with popular directions for quick deployment once on the scene. Traffic control messages can also be tailored to your specific situation or application.
The developers at SafeAll have provided two options to control the Traffic Commander on your truck. The sign can be hard-wired directly to the truck on which is mounted through SafeAll’s Sign Dial. This patent-pending combination works great in areas with connectivity issues and eliminates delays in sign deployment. The sign can also be controlled through a mobile device, like a tablet or smartphone, giving operators remote access to control the sign at the scene and away from the cab.
